What To Look For When Buying A New Cat Condo

It's easy to get carried away when buying a cat condo. There are some really attractive units that you just know your cat will love! There are elaborate towers and trees that have multiple levels, hammocks and hanging toys for your pet to play with. Before you spend a lot of money on that new special gift for your kitten, make sure you have done a bit of research. You don't want to have buyer's regret after you set up your purchase.

Tips For Buying A Cat Condo

Step one when it comes to buying a cat condo is pretty basic. Size matters and is very important when you are choosing the right tree or condo unit. While there might only be 6 to 7 pounds difference in the weight of a medium cat and a large cat, that difference is important. Larger cats need a larger condo unit. It's simple to see once you set up your condo tower and tree. On the flip side, smaller cats may be intimidated by a really tall tower and have problems climbing up the different tiers. Make sure you have a size appropriate condo setup for your pets. Size is also important if you have more than one cat. Cats can be playful and active with each other. Having two or three kittens decide that they want to jump on the tower all at once can be disastrous. If they hit at the same time you might have 50 plus pounds of kitty hit your condo and a small unit won't do well with that. Check the dimensions of the tiers and the condo rooms. Are they big enough for your pet? Pet experts have a lot of stories about how good intentions can go wrong. Choosing A Cat Condo

Safety First!

While the size of your cat condo is important, the anchoring system is just as critical. A small unit probably won't have, and won't need, an anchor system. It's low to the floor and is designed for one cat. Your pet would have to work pretty hard to knock it over. Plus, even if the unit toppled with your cat at the top level, the fall to the floor isn't dramatic. Most smaller units are as wide as they are tall and are very sturdy. A tall, multi-level cat tower is different. It's base may be the same size as a small unit's but it might be three times as tall. Taller means less stable and less stable means that you need to take special care. Most tall cat towers will come with a series of ties, clips and brackets that are designed for attaching the unit to a wall. Some can be attached to a window frame or door frame. You need to take full advantage of these anchors to make sure that the condo never tips over. It could cause damage to your furniture, the tower itself and, most importantly, your beloved pet.

Check The Materials Being Used

Your cat will be spending a lot of time (hopefully!) on this tower so you want to make sure it is made from quality materials. Rugged sisal should be used for any scratching poles and ramps. This durable material will give your pet traction but will stand up to the fiercest scratching. Don't settle for burlap or other woven fabric. Once your cat has snagged a thread it will be able to shred the rest of the pole or ramp in no time. The material covering the tiers and rooms should be soft, plush and easy to clean. Poly fabrics are best for staying clean and are easy to clean. Some of the more expensive towers will have wool blends being used. They will make you feel good because they are natural fabrics but you will have problems cleaning. If the fabric can absorb stains and odors you will need to do extra work to keep surfaces clean and fresh.  Buying a cat condo also means looking at what toys are attached. Most multi-level towers will have dangling toys to amuse your pet. These toys should be well attached to the unit. Your pet will be inclined to grab it and pull and it needs to be clamped on to the unit really well. Make sure the toy doesn't have any sharp edges, a swatting paw doesn't need to get cut. A good pet owner knows that they need to supply their cat with some basics. Besides buying the best food they will want to make sure their cat has a good litter box, solid vet care, a clean litter box and some toys. Buying a cat condo is a great addition for your cat's pleasure and comfort.

Cat Trees Versus Cat Condos

Cat trees versus cat condos may be an argument that doesn’t have to happen. Both offer safe spots for your pet to lounge or play on their own.  Cats love to climb and play on trees and condos, what we call them doesn’t really matter.

Cat Trees Versus Cat Condos

Cat trees and condos are the best places for your cat to spend some time. The two types of structures can completely different but they have a lot of similarities. A cat tree is a great place for your pet to climb and play while a condo is a structure where they can exercise as well as rest. A cat tree is also an excellent place for them to play with other cats and use the scratching posts. If you want to keep your cat happy and healthy, cat trees are a good choice. The argument of cat trees versus cat condos is usually just one of terminology.  Both are designed to amuse your pet, even allowing them to have some of their favorite kitten toys hanging from the tree.

You’ll find various types of cat condos for different cats. You can choose a simple wooden one with an elaborate playground. A cat condo or tree that is attached to the wall can be great if you have several cats or a larger one. You’ll find different types of condos that feature multiple components for your cat to enjoy. There are often hammocks and ledges on a condo for your pet to lounge on as well as ramps and dangling toys. They are easy to use and install, and most come with simple instructions for assembly.

Choose Your Cat Tree Carefully

Some cat trees or condos are the ultimate in comfort as well as being practical. They may have a ramp from the floor to a level that has a ledge. The top piece often features a resting shelf for your cat while other levels may have a condo room or a hammock. The modules are easy to assemble and attach to each other securely. Some may also include a feeding area and litter box,, but many pet owners prefer to keep those two items separate from the climbing tree.

A cat tree is a great way to give your cat their own space. A condo allows your feline friend to be more independent, as it will be a separate space. Some are small, while others are larger, and come with a variety of different amenities. While some cat condos do not include a separate bed, they are great places to play and socialize. With a freestanding cat tree, your pet will have a place of their own where they can watch and relax.

Is There A Difference Between A Tree And A Condo?

A typical cat condo can be placed on the floor, where your cat can easily get to it and climb. It is a good place for your pets to exercise and play safely.   A cat tree also gives your cat a place to sleep that is above the chaos of the floor.  Your pet will be able to use the tree or condo not only for exercise but also as a place of refuge.  Good pet owners know that they need to not only keep their cats safe but to amuse them as well.

If you’re a cat lover, a cat tree can make a perfect home for your pet. A cat condo is a great place for your feline friend to stay and feel warm and safe. They also can be a great place for your feline companion to hide and ignore all of the humans around them.   Pay attention to the size of your cat or cats when you are buying a unit, larger cats need larger trees and condos.

The Feandrea Multi Level Cat Tree For Large Cats

Large cats will love the Feandrea multi level cat tree and condo. Even the most finicky cat or kitten will be challenged by this great cat condo.  With multiple levels, two rooms and assorted dangling toys, your pet will be constantly amused and satisfied with this great cat tree.

Large Cats Will Love The Feandrea Multi Level Cat Tree

Condos and cat trees that are designed for larger cats need to have a few basic features.  Obviously it needs to be larger than a standard condo, you are trying to make a special space for bigger animals.  It needs to be extremely sturdy and safe.  Larger cats mean that there will be more weight on the levels and more weight shifting when the cat leaps or jumps.  An unsteady platform could lead to disaster.  Luckily, both of those issues are solved by the Feandrea multi level cat tree.  It’s as solid as a rock and will stand up to any cat attack.

The base of this unit is good sized and stable.  Measuring almost 24″ X 22″, the platform is very well anchored.  The attached ramp also acts as a stabilizer and will help keep the condo from tipping over.  Four corner posts help with stability as well and the multiple tiers offer even more stability to this unit.

There Are A Lot Of Features And Options

You will be amazed at how many different features there are to this cat condo.  Two large condo rooms offer spaces for your pet to snooze in or just hide if they want some privacy.  A ramp at the base lets your pet take a bit of a run up to the second level where they can choose from a room or two other levels.  We all know that cats can never have too many toys and there are three hanging balls for your cat’s amusement.

Besides the two good sized condo rooms there are three well-padded perches for your pet to rest on.  Covered with a plush, cozy fabric, these perches have raised edges so that your cat can either lean on them or use them for support while napping.  Taking good care of your kitten or cat means having an outlet for their scratching and all of the posts are covered with a durable sisal.  Even the most determined scratcher won’t be able to shred this material.

FEANDREA 67

Remember That This Is For Large Cats

While this is an excellent cat condo you do need to keep in mind that it is designed for large cats or multiple smaller cats.  This is a very large unit and will take up floor space.  Four square feet may not sound like a big footprint but in a small room it is.  67″ high means that someone under 5’7″ is shorter than the cat tower.  Weight is also a consideration as this tree weighs in at 65 pounds.  There are attachment pieces that allow you to anchor this to a wall and that is recommended.  You will need to assemble this unit but you have to do that with cat trees of all sizes.

Overall this is a really good tree for large cats or for multiple medium sized cats.  You do pay more for this unit but you get a lot for your dollar, it is a value priced item.  It’s not a good condo for small or older cats, the tiers are far apart and require a lot of jumping and climbing.  However, it is a really good unit for large, active cats that need some entertainment.

Catry Cat Tree For Small Cats

The Catry Cat Tree for small cats is very good, simple cat condo that works well in smaller spaces. This compact cat condo is a very good value and is perfect for small apartments.  Some cat trees, while offering a lot of options, can be quite large pieces of furniture and take up a lot of room.  If you are short on space, and have a smaller kitten or cat, you might want to take a look at this well made, smaller cat condo.

Small Cats Will Love The Catry Cat Tree

Small cats and kittens have different needs than larger cats have.  That may sound basic but many people don’t pay enough attention to the type of care that a smaller cat needs.  Smaller cats and kittens don’t have the ability to always leap and climb on very tall condos and trees, plus they don’t need as much room when they do get onto a level or tier.

The first thing that you will notice about this unit is its size.  That’s fine, it is a small unit and is meant to be a small unit.  The footprint in your house or apartment will be small, yet it is still very stable and sturdy.  As a concerned pet owner, you want to make sure that your pet is always safe.  Because this is a smaller unit you don’t have to worry about your kitten or small cat taking a tumble from a tall height.  They also won’t be able to knock this tower over, it is very well balanced.

A Small Tower But With Plenty Of Features

A basic function of a good cat condo or tower is to give your cat or kitten something that will amuse them and challenge them.  The Catry cat tree does that quite easily.  There are four key parts to this unit.  The first is the top tier, a padded level that allows your pet to comfortably sit up high and survey the room.  The next part is a plush lined hammock that is built for comfort.  Supported by two towers, the hammock lets your cat snuggle in for a snooze.  If they get bored, part three can come into play.  A tempting feather string toy is hanging from the upper level and your cat can have its way with it.  The fourth part is the three separate scratching posts that are covered with a durable sisal.  These are long lasting and will withstand even the most aggressive pets.

Is the Catry Cat Tree the best option for your pet?  If you want a small cat condo that doesn’t take up much room and is inexpensive you might want to buy this.  However, if you have a large cat, or two cats, this condo won’t work very well.  Also, there isn’t a room or suite with this tower, only a ledge.  If your cat likes to get away from everything they won’t be able to do it here.  This is a good unit for about $39 and won’t take up a lot of space, but it is quite limited.

The IMUsee Large Cat Tree

The IMUsee large cat tree is a very good multi-level condo for bigger cats. While it is a large piece of furniture, it will do a good job for bigger cats.  It’s also a great condo for multiple cats to play on, it is large enough to handle three to four cats at one time.

The IMUsee Large Cat Tree With Multiple Tiers

Multiple tiers is the obvious feature with this condo tower.  Counting the two hammocks there are 11 tiers for your cat to play and lounge on.  Pet owners are very aware of how quickly cats can get bored but there are a lot of places to explore on this tower.  Even the most finicky of cats will need some time to check out all of the levels on this tower.

While you want to amuse and challenge your cat you also want to make sure that they are safe while using their tower.  You probably have heard stories of cat towers tipping over, or maybe you have had that happen in your home.  Tipping towers are dangerous and you want a unit that is stable.  This is a very stable unit.  It’s well designed and the base is solid.  Even a couple of leaping cats won’t be able to knock this tree over.

Some Features Of The IMUsee Large Cat Tree

Besides being a really safe cat condo, the IMUsee large cat tree offers a lot of attractive features for you and your pet.  11 levels of fun are complimented with 10 separate scratching posts.  These are covered with a tough sisal fabric and will withstand the nastiest clawing that your pet can offer.  Cats love toys and there are three separate ball toys hanging from different tiers.

All of the tiers and the hammocks are covered with a plush, cozy fabric that is easy to clean.  The front ramp is solidly attached and will hold the weight of even the heaviest of cats.  You will want to attach this unit to a wall for the best support.

Any Negatives?

This is a big unit and is not meant for small spaces.  You will want to attach it to a wall for the best support.  It’s also heavy, it weighs over 60 pounds.  It is a piece of furniture and will overwhelm a small space.

That said, if you have large cats this is an excellent cat tree.  It is more expensive than smaller condos but it will work well with three to four cats and is excellent for large cats.  It’s well made and is worth the money if you need something for a larger cat.

The Pawstory Cat Tree And Tower

The Pawstory cat tree and tower may be the perfect small cat condo for your pet. While it isn’t very tall, it has a lot of fun features that your kitten will love.  This multi-level cat condo is designed for small to mid-sized cats and will amuse your pet for hours on end.

The Pawstory Cat Tree And Tower Is A Great Smaller Cat Condo

Many of the more popular cat condos available are tall, take up a lot of space and are designed for bigger cats.  That’s usually no problem, even small cats are able to enjoy a bigger cat tree.  However, it is nice to have a unit that takes up less space while still having enough features to amuse your pet.  That’s where the Pawstory cat tree and tower shines, it is a very good, moderately priced smaller cat tree.

Good cat trees and condos do two things very well.  First, they challenge your pet.  Different levels, hanging toys and crawl spaces keep your cat interested in what they are doing.  Second is the ability for you cat to get away from things.  They may use the hammock, snuggle into the small room or perch on the top level to remove themselves from any hubbub or chaos going on around them.  Even though this is a smaller unit, it lets your cat do all of those things.

Challenge Your Cat!

Even though this tower is only 35″ tall, it has 5 different levels for your cat to explore.  The main level has a walk-through room that is big enough for most cats to lay down in.  A small second level is fun for your cat to jump on while the third level offers them a chance to smack around the toy ball hanging near it.  The top level is a wide perch that will let your cat sit comfortably on while they survey their kingdom.  It is also the access point to a comfy hammock that is a step down.

Pawstory Cat Tree, Cat Tower with Sisal Scratching Post for Indoor Cats, 35

Most of the tower is covered with a plush, soft fabric that is resistant to tears while offering a lot of comfort.  Two scratching poles are covered with sisal and will hold up to the most determined scratcher.  Two cats can easily use this tree at the same time, there is a surprising amount of space for them to romp around on.

There Are A Few Negatives That We Should Mention

While this is a very good smaller cat tree, there are some things that you need to consider before buying this unit.  It is small, much shorter than many cat condos available.  That can be important if you have a very energetic cat who needs something that will challenge them physically.  Smaller is size means that it is for smaller cats.  Two 18 pound cats will not play nicely on this cat tree.  Some pet owners have complained about the assembly instructions, although there isn’t a whole lot of assembly to be done.  We do agree that the instructions are a bit vague.

Pricing for this tower is reasonable but not necessarily inexpensive.  It will usually retail for around $60, meaning it is a decent value but not a great one.  If you have limited space and only one cat, this might be a very good option.  However, if you have a couple of active, larger cats you probably need to look at a larger unit.
